No. 87 of 300 copies printed. A scarce book on the little-known, ill-fated involvement of a legion of British volunteers in the First Carlist War. The disastrous history of the campaign - disease, desertion, starvation, and mutiny - is largely told through the letters home of one soldier, Charles William Thompson. The Thompson Correspondence is reproduced for its historical interest rather than that of Postal History - letters of the British Legion are difficult to recognise, having the normal markings of the period, but the postal markings on this correspondence are illustrated.

Based on their earlier work 'Poland Locals', the current book has been totally re-worked, concentrating only on the private or municipal Local delivery posts (which began operating from 1915 and ceased by 1919), and the 1918 provisional Postmaster overprints, both treated in more depth. These local issues reflect the birth of the Polish Republic and are commonly called the '1918 Locals'. Well illustrated in black & white.
