Publisher: Philatelic Congress of India, 1992.
Hardback, dustwrapper, 271 pages + plates, dustwrapper rubbed at corners, slight spine-lean, in Good condition.
An excellent handbook covering the postal history, postage stamps and stationery of the C.E.F. - the British contribution (consisting almost entirely of Indian troops) to the international force sent to China following the Boxer Rebellion. Well illustrated, including several pages of colour plates. "The C.E.F. episode is a landmark in the postal history of the Indian Campaigns. The postal commitment lasted for almost a quarter of a century. Special Indian postage stamps and stationery were used with separate issues for the reigns of Queen Victoria, King Edward VII and King George V. The C.E.F. post offices in China offered almost all the important postal facilities available in India with the addition of some new money order services. The C.E.F. mail was carried by all the steamer mail lines between Europe, India and China and later even by the Trans-Siberian Railway. During 23 years of operations, an array of postmarks was generated, unequalled in any earlier overseas assignment. The C.E.F. records such interesting developments in the growth of the Field Post, that it has fascinated students of Postal History, Traditional Philately and Post Office historians in general."

Virk, D.S. - Postal History of Indian Military Campaigns
Sikkim - Tibet 1903-1908

Publisher: Philatelic Congress of India & Army Postal Service Association, 1989.
Hardback, dustwrapper, 144 pages + plates, dustwrapper spine a little sunned, spine-lean, in Good condition.
An excellent handbook covering the postal history of the Sikkim-Tibet campaign. Well illustrated, including several pages of colour plates. "The Postal History of the Sikkim-Tibet Campaign is most interesting, covering as it does, a period of 5 years beginning in 1903 with political manoeuvres, followed in 1904 by the long military march to Lhasa and ending in 1908 with the evacuation of the occupied Chumbi Valley. Moreover it offers an unusual example of the mingling of civil and army post offices. "Besides providing detailed postal history of the Campaign, the book offers much useful information in its Appendices for researching postal covers - Roll of Officers, Table of Post Offices, Postal Rates, List of Stamps and Seals and many illustrations. Part 2 of the book contains a Table of Recorded Postmarks and their drawings specially prepared by Dr. Wolfgang Hellrigl. The contemporary Field Post Office Diary of the Campaign containing a rare day-to-day chronicle of postal work and problems on Field Service is reproduced in Part 3 in its entirety."

Shelley, Ronald G. - The British Legion in Spain during the First Carlist War 1832-1839
Shelley, Ronald G. - The British Legion in Spain
during the First Carlist War 1832-1839

Publisher: Spanish Philatelic Society, Brighton, 1975.
Large format paperback, illustrated, 72 pages, tiny mark to front cover, short tear along spine, in Good condition.
No. 87 of 300 copies printed. A scarce book on the little-known, ill-fated involvement of a legion of British volunteers in the First Carlist War. The disastrous history of the campaign - disease, desertion, starvation, and mutiny - is largely told through the letters home of one soldier, Charles William Thompson. The Thompson Correspondence is reproduced for its historical interest rather than that of Postal History - letters of the British Legion are difficult to recognise, having the normal markings of the period, but the postal markings on this correspondence are illustrated.

Publisher: International Society for Japanese Philately, USA, 2003.
ISJP Monograph 14, paperback, illustrated, 62 pages, in Very Good condition.
This monograph chronicles the fascinating, but relatively unknown story of exchanges of Prisoners of War and civilian detainees between Japan and the Allies during World War II. These exchanges were negotiated through neutral countries, and were undertaken by chartered ships at neutral ports such as Lourenço Marques, Portuguese Mozambique, and Marmagao, Portuguese India. Through painstaking research, the author, has uncovered revealing information about the largely unrecorded details of accompanying mail included in the exchanges. He illustrates several examples as well as copies of associated mail such as letters written on board ship and mailed at ports visited after the exchange, letters mailed from the neutral exchange ports, and airmail addressed to passengers sent to ports that their ships were scheduled to visit. Illustrated in black & white.
