Negus, James

Index to The Philatelist 1866-76 & 1934-74

Publisher: Robson Lowe, London, 1975

First edition, hardback, dustwrapper, 150 pages, VG condition.

The Philatelist was first published in 1866 but ceased ten years later. It was revived by Robson Lowe in 1934 – originally under the title The Raconteur. Its important position in the literature of philately and postal history makes this key to its contents essential to collectors.
From 1871 to 1876 The Philatelist ran a series of articles on forgeries, often illustrated with actual examples of the forged stamps. This classic study of early forgeries, The Spud Papers, is fully indexed here, with a useful introduction by Lowell Ragatz.
