An excellent handbook covering the postal history, postage stamps and stationery of the C.E.F. – the British contribution (consisting almost entirely of Indian troops) to the international force sent to China following the Boxer Rebellion. Well illustrated, including several pages of colour plates. “The C.E.F. episode is a landmark in the postal history of the Indian Campaigns. The postal commitment lasted for almost a quarter of a century. Special Indian postage stamps and stationery were used with separate issues for the reigns of Queen Victoria, King Edward VII and King George V. The C.E.F. post offices in China offered almost all the important postal facilities available in India with the addition of some new money order services. The C.E.F. mail was carried by all the steamer mail lines between Europe, India and China and later even by the Trans-Siberian Railway. During 23 years of operations, an array of postmarks was generated, unequalled in any earlier overseas assignment. The C.E.F. records such interesting developments in the growth of the Field Post, that it has fascinated students of Postal History, Traditional Philately and Post Office historians in general.”
